A House and a Home

Just over two weeks ago, I received the key to my house. That means every day I would bring boxes to the house and unpack them while managing work and school. It was not easy. I was killing myself. I’d start at 7am and load boxes into my car, go to work, unload boxes and unpack some.

The first weekend I had the house I was supposed to move furniture from my grandmother’s house, but U-Haul ruined that. I reserved a truck, got confirmation on Thursday, got a call on Friday saying they didn’t have a truck. I was pissed to say the least. I do have to say, everyone I spoke to at U-Haul was very nice. I called Penske and they were amazing. The guy I talked to did everything he could to try and find me a truck for the next day, 12 hours later. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to find one. I ended up reserving a truck for this past Saturday. Penske gave me a free day for the trouble. They didn’t have to do that. None of this was on Penske, but they were amazing.

That Sunday, I had an amazing co-worker and her husband help me put in fencing for Scarlett (my dog). It may not be something beautiful to some people, it may not be what others call sufficient. It works for us and I think it looks fine. Maybe in a few years when I have more money I’ll get a bigger fenced in area, but I’m happy with it. I also took Scarlett into the fenced area and she hated it. My trainer then said I should take her in the house every day. She hated that too.

So my week continued of loading the car, work, unloading the car, getting the dog, unpacking, driving the dog back, getting homework in, and going to bed. I didn’t have much of a life that week and all I wanted to do was sleep. It wasn’t easy, but I made it through.

Saturday, my sister, mom, and I loaded the Penske truck and drove home. It was not easy. We were bruised and exhausted. There was no way we were going to unload the truck. I ended up contacting a friend and her husband who both helped me unload everything and clear out my storage unit. Then I had my open house while looking like a truck hit me and my house in shambles with boxes everywhere. It went fine though. I was told people know I’m moving and if they judge me it’s on them. I listened because, well, I didn’t have much of a choice at that point.

So I’ve now spent two nights in my house, and I haven’t slept well either night. My dog woke me up drinking water and emptying the dish, it’s a new house with new sounds, and the mattress is hard. When I have enough money I’ll buy a new one, but until then I’ll be getting used to a hard mattress with a topper. It’ll work for now.

As for Scarlett, she struggled at first. She wouldn’t pee for about a day and a half. She followed me everywhere, refused to eat other than treats, and just acted scared. Well, last night, we had a breakthrough. She peed outside and ate her entire dinner. This morning she peed and pooped and her eyes are no longer red. She’s settling in. Now, the question is, will she let me leave the house without trying to follow? I will get her crate to lock her in when I need to lock her up, but her crate is at the other house and I need to get out in order to get it. But, that’ll be an issue for tomorrow.

As for homework, I’ve been falling behind. It was bound to happen with the move, but I’m working on catching up today. My writing as been nonexistent, but I’ll get there once I’m settled in more. Maybe since I’m off work this week I can spend a little time on it. I’d love to get lost in my characters again, even if it’s for a short time.
